Aṣṭāṅga Yoga Berlin

This centre has been teaching traditional advanced Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga in the traditional "Mysore Style" since 2004. This method is famous for its systematic approach, intensity, clarity and elegance.

Grischa Steffin (founder of Ashtanga Yoga Berlin)

Grischa is the main teacher and founder of Aṣṭāṅga Yoga Berlin.

He is a long-time student of Richard Freeman and, in his experience, only the quality of the practice paves the way to its meaning.

The goals of yoga practice must be derived directly from scriptures such as the Yoga sutras. Grischa is also committed to contributing to global 'climate justice', which means, among other things, refraining from air travel altogether.(source: Ashtanga Berlin)

What is Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga?

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a dynamic yoga (Hatha) that has been taught and introduced to many students around the world by Pattabhi Jois in Mysore, India. It is based on the ancient principles of "vinyasa krama" that Jois learned from his teacher T. Krishnamacharya.

All yoga postures ("Asana") are linked and synchronised with specific breathing instruction. This leads to a deeply concentrated, independent and meditative yoga practice.

Three key principles are observed during the practice:

  • Integration ("Bandha") of opposing qualities and tendencies in the postures ("asana"), creating "good" alignment and intensity.
  • Regular breathing ("Ujjayi Prāṇāyāma") is both calming and warming and is a key to concentration and meditation.
  • A specific observation point for each ("Drishti") also makes the practice much more internal and focused.

All components of the practice require and promote concentration and mindfulness, the heart of yoga practice.
